Plataforma de Big Data do Oceano

Real tests of the Ocean Big Data Platform by the end of the semester

August 13, 2024

The Portugal Blue Digital Hub (PBDH) has announced that by the end of the second half of this year, its innovative Ocean Big Data Platform will undergo real-world testing. This platform has been developed to address the fragmentation of marine data, which is currently dispersed across multiple repositories, and aims to serve as a single access point for critical information.
The Ocean Big Data Platform seeks to aggregate geographical, geophysical, biological, and socio-economic data from Portugal's Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ), creating a common catalogue that will connect key public marine data producers and research institutions. This initiative is in line with the efforts of the National Oceanographic Data Centre (NODC) to centralise and facilitate access to these vital data.
The platform will also offer a Marine Spatial Data Infrastructure (MSDI), ensuring interoperability with other data infrastructures at both national and supranational levels. These data will be crucial for testing and experimenting with new technologies related to the Blue Economy, enabling more efficient planning and the early, informed implementation of marine environment adaptation policies.
Additionally, the initiative aims to empower Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs) and the public sector by providing them with access to high-quality tools and resources. These will be essential for the development of digital products and services with high added value, contributing to the advancement of the Blue Economy in Portugal.
