Project applied for under notice No. 01/SIAC/2013 of COMPETE.

The SIAC Animation 2014 Project (SIAC No. 40960) aimed to ensure financial support for the management of the Knowledge and Sea Economy Cluster in the transition period between the old recognition period of the Collective Efficiency Strategies (EEC) and the launch of the new process.

The project was initially scheduled to close in December 2014, however, and given the delay in launching the new recognition process, the project was extended until 31 March 2015.

In this context, a set of activities to boost the Cluster were carried out, namely: organization of the international event FÓRUM DO MAR 2014, participation in the events Biomarine (Oeiras, October 2014), Mar Algarve Expo (Portimão, October 2014) and EXPOMAR (Cape Verde, November 2014), development of the study Desafios do Mar 2020, organization of SEA OPEN DAYS and SEA INFO DAYS meetings, realization of the series of programmes “Mar, the Promised Land” and the process for “Bronze Label” certification by the European Cluster Excellence Initiative (ECEI), among others.

The 2014 SIAC ANIMAÇÃO Project closed on 31 March 2015, with an execution rate of approximately 97.7%.

The Project Animation, Coordination and Management of the Sea Economy and Knowledge Economy Cluster (SIAC No. 7576) aimed to ensure financial support for the management of the Cluster.

This project allowed Forum Oceano, as the organization responsible for boosting the Knowledge and Economy of the Sea Cluster, to participate in activities such as: monitoring the anchor projects recognized together with the Cluster of the Knowledge and Economy of the Sea (2009); support the promotion of complementary projects promoted by partners of the Cluster; expansion of the partnership to support the development of cooperation between members and partners; promotion of the Cluster, substantiated with the participation in various events, including conferences and seminars, among other activities.

The SIAC DYNAMISATION Project closed on 31 August 2013, with an execution rate of 99.6%.

Fórum Oceano participated in the ATLANTIC BLUE TECH (ABT) Project which was developed by eight partners from the five European countries of the Atlantic Area.

ABT was one of the eight projects approved in the 4th Call of the Atlantic Area Programme. Its main objective was the promotion and development of the marine bio-resources sector at Atlantic Area level, involving in a joint and concerted manner innovation and economic development agents, local authorities, and scientific organizations. The project identified the main obstacles to the development of the sector, defined corrective measures and represented an essential link to the 2014-2020 programming period.

The CINMarS Project – Combining Space and Maritime Innovation Networks was the winning project of the ESA – European Space Agency call, under AO/1 8131/14/F/MOS, being concluded in 2016.

The project’s goal was to identify mechanisms to support a strategy for the development of collaborative relationships between innovation networks dedicated to space and the maritime environment, namely in the areas of marine renewable energy (wind, waves, tides); resource extraction (hydrocarbons and other minerals); deep sea mining; marine engineering; ports, maritime transport and logistics; aquaculture and Safety&Security.

CINMarS was coordinated by UCC – University College of Cork (Ireland) and had as partners CIT – Cork Institute of Technology (Ireland), Fórum Oceano and the associates INEGI and INESC TEC (Portugal) and NORUT – Northern Research Institute Tromso AS (Norway).

Fórum Oceano was the Portuguese entity invited to participate in the COFASP Project – Cooperation in Fisheries, Aquaculture and Seafood processing, as part of the prospective study implemented by EFARO, having participated as a stakeholder in the process of identifying the needs and future research priorities in the areas of fisheries, aquaculture, and seafood processing.

Between September 2013 and June 2014 (period of the prospective study) Fórum Oceano involved its members in the search for contributions, according to the requests of the project.

The ENTROPI – Enabling Technologies and Roadmaps for Offshore Platform Innovation project will receive over €600,000 from the European Maritime and Fisheries Fund (EMFF) through the Executive Agency for Small and Medium Enterprises (EASME) and will direct this investment to address critical challenges along the value chain that supports offshore multipurpose platforms.

The development of capacity to build and operate these platforms will enable the expansion of aquaculture and marine renewables, as well as potentially contributing to future seabed mining, i.e., it will compete for three of the Blue Growth priorities.

The consortium, led by Marine Southeast (UK), is made up of 4 other European maritime clusters – Forum Oceano (Portugal), Pôle Mer Bretagne Atlantique (France), IMERC (Ireland) and PLOCAN (Spain).

Started in April 2017, the project will be completed in March 2019.

The Inter-Mares Project (SIAC No. 23051) aimed to contribute directly to achieving the objectives of the Collective Efficiency Strategy – Cluster of Knowledge and Economy of the Sea – particularly about strengthening cooperation between companies and R&D centers and promoting internationalization in different areas of the Economy of the Sea.

In this context, a set of actions were carried out that led to the integration of Fórum Oceano and the Cluster in international networks and partnerships, especially in the Atlantic area, the preparation of promotional materials for the Cluster, the participation in international fairs, the holding of a set of business meetings with foreign guests, namely during the SEA FORUM in 2012 and 2013, and the holding of international conferences, also integrated in the SEA FORUM event in 2012 and 2013.

The SIAC Inter-Mares Project closed on 31 December 2013, with an execution rate of approximately 96%.

The INvertebrateIT Project – Disruptive and forward-looking opportunities for competitive and sustainable aquaculture will receive more than €600,000 from the European Maritime and Fisheries Fund (EMFF) through the Executive Agency for Small and Medium Enterprises (EASME) for the creation of strategic partnerships to accelerate technology transfer in the value chain of invertebrate production management, mainly insects, for the development of sustainable feed for fish produced in aquaculture.

The consortium, led by the Spanish company Innogate to Europe, consists of 2 further SMEs – NGN Pro-active BV (Netherlands) and AquaTT (Ireland), 3 European clusters – Fórum Oceano (Portugal), Pôle Mer Bretagne Atlantique (France) and Cluste de la Acuicultura de Galicia (Spain) and a national agency and marine research centre – Marine Institute (Ireland).

The project started in April 2017 and will be completed in March 2019.

  • Winning projects from the competition held under the INvertebrateIT project will be presented at matchmaking event at AQUA 2018

Under the InvertebrateIT project a call for proposals was open until 28 January 2018, with the aim of selecting and supporting the three projects with the most innovative solutions that contribute to the production of invertebrates for fish feed, to a more competitive aquaculture, and to waste management.

The Portuguese brand EntoGreen was one of the three winners of this competition, along with the IPATAC and MUSFLOUR projects.

The North Ocean Project’s main objective was to contribute to the reinforcement of business competitiveness in the North region, by promoting the internationalization and increase of exports of companies in the sector of the economy of the Sea present in the region.

The project was structured in three distinct but intrinsically associated actions, namely:

Action 1 – the study of markets of international demand
Action 2 – the exploration of business opportunities at international level
Action 3 – business capacity building for internationalization

The North Ocean Project was co-financed by NORTE 2020 – Regional Operational Programme of the North, as a result of the application to the Call NORTE-52-2015-05 – Support System for Collective Actions “Internationalization”.

The OnBoard project – Development of professional profiles of training curricula for the ports and logistics sector aims to design, implement, and validate a learning model for the ports and logistics sector, complementary to new professional training profiles and curricula, promoting a new approach and effective cooperation between training entities and companies in the maritime sector.

With a duration of two years, the project is co-financed by the Erasmus+ programme. The coordination is the responsibility of INOVA +, which has as partners Fórum Oceano, ISCIA – Instituto Superior de Ciências da Informação e da Administração, CIRA – Comunidade Intermunicipal da Região de Aveiro, MSE – Marine South East (UK) and Halpin – Centre for Research and Innovation at the National Maritime College of Ireland (NMCI).

This Group shall, according to its areas of intervention and skills, and as far as possible within their respective programmes of activity, create favorable conditions for the implementation of projects and actions identified, mobilize support, carry out promotion, monitoring and dissemination of results.
The general action plan will be based on three axes:

  • building a nautical brand,
  • qualification of the offer and international promotion.

In line with its mission statement, Fórum Oceano hosts the operation of the Nautical Portugal Dynamizing Group and ensures its animation, being responsible for calling meetings, preparing materials to support its operation, submitting proposals, and following up on agreed decisions, as well as providing information on the progress of ongoing projects and actions.

The Group aims to boost the nautical tourism sector in Portugal. In this context, it has moved forward with work aimed at the development, promotion, and certification of Nautical Stations in Portugal.

The Portugal Náutico Project was promoted by AEP – Associação Empresarial de Portugal and financed by the COMPETE Programme, under the QREN. It took place between January 2014 and June 2015 and Fórum Oceano was the partner entity in its implementation.
The Project sought to answer the question: what can be done to provide Portugal with a collective strategy to accelerate the organization of the recreational boating sector, enabling it to compete in the global market?

Fórum Oceano was one of the 15 entities of the REMCAP Project – Resource Efficient Maritime Capacity, being the only representative of Portugal in this group that involved institutions from six countries.

The entities of this consortium represent six European Maritime Clusters: England – Solent Maritime Cluster, Sweden – Western Sweden Maritime Cluster, France – Pole Mer Mediterranee, Portugal – Fórum Oceano, Ireland – Irish Maritime & Energy Research Cluster and Lithuania – Klaipeda Maritime Cluster.

The REMCAP Project focused on capacity building to promote innovation among European companies and enable sustainable growth in the target markets: offshore wind energy, ocean energy, fisheries, aquaculture, blue biotechnology, aggregates and dredging, and seabed mining.

SE@PORTS – Sustainable Energy at Sea PORTS is a project that aims to develop the implementation of wave energy converters in ports, namely at their jetties, contributing to the development of sustainable energy.

The Project VASCO DA GAMA – Training for Greener and Safer Maritime Transport was led by the Conference of Peripheral Maritime Regions of Europe (CPMR), with the involvement of 22 entities from 12 European countries and the objective pursued was the development of professional qualifications and, in particular, improvement of skills of people employed in the European maritime transport sector, in order to meet specific new challenges such as maritime safety and reduction of environmental impact.

Fórum Oceano participated in the project through representation provided by the Associate ISCIA – Instituto Superior de Ciências da Informação e da Administração (Aveiro).

The WAOH project – The Wildsea Atlantic Ocean Heritage Route: Dive Into Adventure aims to develop a sustainable dive route in Europe, connecting world-class dive sites from the southernmost tip of Portugal and Spain to the northernmost tip of Europe, spanning Ireland and the UK, that embody shared European values and heritage.

The route will promote the 5,000 km of Atlantic European coastline as a unique transnational tourist destination not only for divers but also for eco-tourists.

Co-funded by the EMFF (European Maritime and Fisheries Fund) programme, WAOH involves partners from Portugal, Spain, Ireland and the UK and has a two-year implementation period.

The WAOH! project consortium organized the first international stakeholder workshop during Business2Sea, bringing together 30 representatives from official tourism entities, municipalities, dive centers, marine ecotourism operators, travel agents and NGOs, from the destinations that integrate this European Sustainable Diving Route for now.

The EBB – European Marine Biological Resource Centre Biobank project aims to bring together providers/biobanks of Marine Biological Resources (MBR), end-users (industry) and the administration responsible for the implementation of the ABS – “Access and Benefit Sharing” regulation in order to present industrial use cases that can help develop and communicate a set of recommendations and best practice guidelines for marine biological resources collections and for end users who wish to access these resources for applied research purposes.

The project will also lay the foundations for the coordination of the main marine biobanks in Europe. New common tools and protocols for the maintenance of the RBMs will also be developed and procedures to comply with the regulations on access to genetic resources will be harmonized by facilitating access to marine biodiversity, its data and extractable products.

With a duration of 36 months, the EBB is coordinated by the University of Vigo and co-financed under the Interreg Atlantic Area Programme.

The main objective of the SHERPA DO MAR project is to stimulate the creation and consolidation of new knowledge-intensive business activities in the maritime domain, in the Galicia-North Portugal cooperation area, favoring the creation of employment and the increase of business competitiveness.

The project is co-funded by FEDER under the INTERREG VA Spain-Portugal (POCTEP) cooperation programme and aims to coordinate the existing entrepreneurship support resources in the geographical cooperation area, to promote the creation of a technology-based entrepreneurship network in the maritime sector and consequently contribute to improving the competitiveness of existing companies.

This initiative will be supported by the main universities and research centers in the Euroregion, which will promote the capitalization of University-Business and Business-University synergies through knowledge transfer.

Along with the concerted actions, the project also aims to develop a set of innovative initiatives to achieve a greater valorization of this entrepreneurship platform.

SHERPA DO MAR is led by the University of Vigo, with the partners Fórum Oceano, Consorcio Zona Franca de Vigo, University of Santiago de Compostela, University of Coruña, UPTEC, University of Porto, CIIMAR and Axencia Galega de Innovación.

The ValorMar project – Integral valorization of marine resources: potential, technological innovation and new applications aims to develop innovative technological solutions that enhance the valorization and efficient use of marine resources through the integration of value chains, in a circular economy logic, articulating: aquaculture, food, biomedical, pharmaceutical and cosmetic industries.

ValorMar’s general objective is the valorization of marine resources, through research, development and demonstration of new products and the improvement of production processes, proposing innovative solutions for the creation of new healthy food products, using innovative, sustainable and efficient technologies.

The project, funded under the Mobilizing Programmes of Portugal 2020 (SI&IDT), started in October 2017 and should be completed in September 2020, with the participation of 18 companies and 13 entities of the R&D system.
