Blue Biobanks Digital Research Platform at Cidade Azul Conference 2026

The Portugal Blue Digital Hub (PBDH) participated in Conferência Cidade Azul 2026, organised by Público, with the workshop Blue Biobanks Digital Research Platform: um portal para a Economia Azul, held on 22 April, Earth Day, in the Senate Room of the Rectory of the University of Aveiro.
The session was dedicated to the presentation and practical exploration of the Blue Biobanks Digital Research Platform, a digital repository of marine biodiversity developed within the scope of PBDH. The platform aims to bring science, innovation and the valorisation of marine biological resources closer together by providing relevant information on biological material stored in partner biobanks.
Throughout the workshop, participants had the opportunity to test the platform’s features through real and fictional scenarios, exploring catalogues of biological material from the biobanks of CIIMAR, the Portuguese Institute for Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) and the University of Aveiro.
Through the platform, it was possible to search, filter and select information based on biological and environmental attributes, identify records by location or depth, and simulate opportunities for research, innovation and biotechnological application across different areas of the Blue Economy.
The session demonstrated the potential of this digital tool to support the identification of biological material of interest, facilitate access to specialised information and promote new opportunities for the valorisation of marine resources. At the end, participants were also able to download a summary of their search and access the contact details of the entities responsible for the relevant biobanks.
