Novarium and the Ocean Forum have signed a pan-Atlantic partnership to promote ocean investment and accelerate the growth of the Blue Economy in regional and international networks, with a particular focus on Ocean Artificial Intelligence. The co-development of international activities for Novarium, in synergies with projects developed by the Ocean Forum, such as the Hub Azul and the Portugal Blue Digital Hub, will allow startups from Quebec and Portugal greater access to the North American and European markets.
This partnership also allows Novarium employees to work in Lisbon, in synergy with the Rede Fórum Oceano-Hub Azul facilities, supporting Quebec Blue Economy startups to use Portugal as a European launchpad. Novarium will also welcome Portuguese startups with specific R&D needs, as well as access to a variety of prototyping infrastructures.
This partnership supports the Ocean Forum's strategy of taking increasingly solid steps in demonstrating AI applications and the Blue Economy sectors, which include the Ocean.AI Summit in September 2024, taking advantage of Quebec's recognized global leadership in artificial intelligence.
“Portugal is a global leader in developing a powerful national Blue Economy strategy. We are grateful to have such great partners in Canada, with the Canadian Embassy in Portugal in Lisbon, and in Québec, with the Délégation du Québec in Barcelona, who share the same vision for the development of such a promising sector. This strategic partnership has been developing over the past 18 months and we are delighted to finally begin the implementation phase.”
– Martin Beaulieu, CEO, La Zone Bleu
“Forum Oceano, the organization that manages the Portuguese Blue Economy cluster, has committed to an internationalization strategy based on establishing strong relationships with clusters in countries that, like Portugal, are committed to developing a Blue Economy based on sustainability,
circularity and digitalization. Canada is undoubtedly one of these countries. That is why the cooperation agreements with leading Canadian organizations, such as Novarium, are part of the materialization of our internationalization strategy. We have a lot to learn from Canada, and we feel that we can contribute to enriching the Canadian strategy and Canadian clusters with practices that we have been implementing in Portugal.”
– Prof. António Nogueira Leite, President, Fórum Oceano
“The joint ventures with Fórum Oceano will help founders and researchers develop a global mindset and powerful international market entry strategies. We can only win through new collaborations with ecosystems that share our focus on the Blue Economy and its promising solutions, with strong growth potential for the development of maritime resources and the application of technologies in maritime engineering and smart navigation.”
– Amélie Desrochers, Executive Director, Novarium
“This partnership is of the utmost importance for the development and internationalization of innovation ecosystems based in Portugal, such as the Hub Azul Network and the Portugal Blue Digital Hub, with a special focus on the application of artificial intelligence to the Blue Economy.”
– Ruben Eiras, Secretary General, Fórum Oceano
