Wrap-up of the NODC-PT Best Practices Webinars

February 6, 2026

The Best Practices sessions of the National Oceanographic Data Centre (NODC-PT), promoted by the Portuguese Institute for Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) and the Hydrographic Institute – Portuguese Navy, within the framework of the Portugal Blue Digital Hub (PBDH), were successfully concluded, with strong engagement from the marine data community.
Across the three webinar sessions, around 122 participants from different fields took part, including researchers, technical experts, and representatives from public and private organisations, all with a shared interest in the management, use, and valorisation of ocean data in a digital environment.
Sessions focused on capacity building and best practices
The main objective of these sessions was to strengthen technical skills and promote the sharing of best practices associated with the NODC-PT Big Data Platform, with a focus on the efficient, interoperable, and sustainable use of marine information.
The topics addressed included:
  • Creation and management of metadata, highlighting its relevance, impact, and role in information reuse;

  • Access, integration, and use of marine geospatial data;

  • Use of ocean data in GIS environments;

  • Interoperability between systems and platforms;

  • Efficiency in the management and reuse of marine information.

Key highlights
The first session, held on 15 January, focused on metadata creation, emphasising its importance in ensuring the quality, integrity, and accessibility of marine geospatial information.
The second session, on 21 January, explored practical approaches and consolidated essential knowledge for more interoperable and effective management of marine information.
The third session, held on 3 February, brought together the key concepts covered in the previous sessions and introduced new perspectives on the use and valorisation of marine data.
Results and impact
The sessions stood out for their active participation, very positive feedback from attendees, and the strengthening of collaboration within the blue digital ecosystem. Key outcomes included:
  • Sharing of technical knowledge;

  • Clarification of best practices;

  • Active engagement of participants;

  • Strengthening the link between marine data producers and users.

We would like to thank everyone who participated and contributed to these sessions for their engagement and for sharing their experiences. We will continue working to promote best practices, interoperability, and collaboration, supporting a more efficient and sustainable use of ocean data in Portugal.
